Another industry that I’m interested in and currently studying for is graphic design. Graphic designers create and combine symbols, images and text to convey visual representations of ideas and messages. They use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to create designs. Most common uses of graphic design include corporate design (logos and branding, editorial design (magazines, newspapers and books), web design, packaging and many more. It’s an interesting industry, because there are so many branches within it, that anyone who has skills can find a place they belong to with their particular skill set. Also, after doing some research about the industry, I found something that was pretty interesting. Apparently the origins of graphic design can be traced all the way from the origins of human existence, which is quite surprising and cool.

Now, I want to talk about the industry itself. There are a lot of directions you can go as a designer, but one stands out for me, personally. That profession is concept artist. Concept artists pretty much try their best to convey an idea for films, games, animations, comic books in an illustrative form. Concept art is developed through several iterations and multiple solutions are explored before settling on the final design. Concept art is not only used to develop the work, but also to show the project’s progress to directors, clients and investors. Once the development of the work is complete, concept art may be reworked and used for advertising materials. This career intrigues me, because I love films and games, so working for a franchise that I love is almost magical. I am not skilled enough for the industry just yet, but I’m getting there slowly but surely, practicing everyday.

Another designer I love is Victor Mosquera. Victor currently works at Ubisoft Toronto but has years of experience in the digital art/concept art world. His list of clients include companies such as Volta, Tor books, Orbit Books, Universal Music Group and One pixel brush. So as you can see he’s worked with quite a bit of companies. His artwork is very unique in a sense that it can be very simple, yet when it needs to be it can be very detailed. I like how he doesn’t stick to just one style, it seems like he can just do all kinds of styles depending on the client he’s working with. That inspires me to try and experiment with new things and not just constantly stick with one thing.
